Mad Scientist Project
In this project, each student selected individual experiments to study for the entire semester. The purpose was to practice the scientific method and share our findings. The experiment I chose was to make a ferrofluid using chemicals. The final product was a presentation that documented my scientific process and my findings. This project was a valuable experience because I was able to practice following the scientific method and also work on time management during this semester-long project.

Personal Memoir
|
In this project, we wrote personal memoirs about an event in our life that shaped us into the people we are today. Through this process, we reviewed literary devices and focused on carefully choosing our words to make all of them meaningful. We also made zines to artistically express our events, which included excerpts from our memoirs. This project helped me feel more comfortable with writing about myself. |
Parallel Dimensions Project
For this project, we used a laser cutter to create cardboard models of different foods. My partner and I chose to create a pumpkin. In order to create this model, we had to conceptualize how to go from 2D to 3D and also calculate the surface area and volume of the final product. Below is a calculation from one of our 'slices'. This project was beneficial to me because I was able to practice finding the area, circumference, and volume of irregular shapes and learn how to use the laser cutter to precisely cut out my final model.

Parable of the Sower Project
In this final mini-project, we were given the choice to either produce five photographs or five different scenes/figures/objects or one large art piece on canvas, wood, or found material that represent, question or work with one of the themes presented in Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower. I chose to write five poems in the style shown in the book accompanied by drawings representing the poems compiled in a final book of poetry.
Artist's Statement: This book of poetry, titled, “EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING” consists of five poems from the novel, “Parable of the Sower” by Octavia Butler and five original poems modeled after Butler’s writing style. The poems were carefully selected from the novel and all center around the novel’s driving theme; change. The original poems were also written about this important theme. The accompanying drawings are meant to enhance the poems and connect them with topics we focused on throughout the semester. This poetry book has a physical copy because of the theme of survival in the novel. The main character Lauren urged the idea of being able to pack up and leave in case of disaster and for this reason, the poetry book is portable and one would be able to take it in a moment’s notice. |
