In this final mini-project, we were given the choice to either produce five photographs or five different scenes/figures/objects or one large art piece on canvas, wood, or found material that represent, question or work with one of the themes presented in Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower. I chose to write five poems in the style shown in the book accompanied by drawings representing the poems compiled in a final book of poetry.
Artist's Statement: This book of poetry, titled, “EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING” consists of five poems from the novel, “Parable of the Sower” by Octavia Butler and five original poems modeled after Butler’s writing style. The poems were carefully selected from the novel and all center around the novel’s driving theme; change. The original poems were also written about this important theme. The accompanying drawings are meant to enhance the poems and connect them with topics we focused on throughout the semester. This poetry book has a physical copy because of the theme of survival in the novel. The main character Lauren urged the idea of being able to pack up and leave in case of disaster and for this reason, the poetry book is portable and one would be able to take it in a moment’s notice.
